2012 barista championship
Infood Barista does it again!
Brewing and presenting the perfect cup of cappuccino might not be an Olympic event, but for the youngest barista at Infood it might as well have been. He will not exchange his two trophies for anything in the world, except for the international barista crown, that is.
Trained by the best, his colleagues, Charles Ngwaroi competed at the regional South African Barista Championship in Port Elizabeth last week – and came back home with no less than two awards.
This achievement came as the biggest, and definitely the most welcome surprise for Charles. “My nerves got the better of me during the first round on Thursday and I did not dream for one moment that I would make it through to the next round.” said Charles
“Hearing my name being called out gave me the confidence I needed, and from there on I gave it my all – no more nerves or thinking that I am not as good as the best.” This attitude made Charles the third barista to bring back home an award to Infood. Not only did he scoop up the award for the Best Cappuccino, but was also crowned, overall winner.
“I am so proud of Charles, he truly deserves these awards, especially keeping in mind that he has never done something like this before.” said the owner of Infood, Jayne.
On September 23, Charles will compete in the National SA Barista Championship in Johannesburg. The format of the competition will be the same as that in the regional round, each competitor must prepare and serve 12 separate espresso beverages: 4 espresso, 4 cappuccino and 4 “signature” drinks of their own creation. Competitors have fifteen minutes in which to prepare all twelve drinks and are judged on various elements including their chosen bean, station cleanliness, taste, beverage presentation, technical skills and total impression by a distinguished panel of judges
2011 barista championship
Our own Belinda Ruiters and Percy Chikwera wowed the judges at the regional South African Barista Championships and brewed themselves into the finals held in Cape Town in 2011 both finishing in the top ten.
For those who don’t know, Barista is the Italian word for bartender – usually a coffee bartender, who prepares and serves gourmet coffees utilising an espresso coffee machine.
At Infood coffee is taken very seriously indeed. We use only the very best roasted and ground organic coffee beans sourced from the birthplace of coffee – Ethiopia.
It is thought that Coffee Bean is possibly a poor anglicized interpretation of “Kaffa Bun” – Kaffa being the forest region where Coffea Arabica grew wild and “Bun” or “Buna” being the Ethiopian word for coffee.
